Kinship Navigator Programs Help Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
If you are a Grandfamily, you are in the rising number of homes caring for misplaced children. According to Wikipedia their are 2.4 million children being raised by grandparents and the number of children being raised by relatives has risen by 222000 children. Their are 460 grandparents nationally raising children below the federal poverty level.
I have been lucky to have enough money to help my grandchildren without things getting to this extreme but if you need help do not be afraid to ask. Go to one of your local child support groups and ask someone to point you in the right direction. Search the internet to see if your state has formed a Kinship Navigator Program. The general requirements for help are that you are taking care of nieces, nephew, siblings or most often, a grandchild. Below is a list of some of them things you may need help with.
~ Furniture
~ Housing
~ Legal Services
~ Food
~ Clothing
~ Child Care Subsidies
This is a small list compared to what you may come up with. the most important thing is the well being and safety of the children. It’s easy sometimes to feel sorry for ourselves and not know if we are prepared to raise more children. These children are scared and need help. It you do not know your grandparents rights please seek the help of an attorney. sometimes parents will withhold visitation simply because they do not want you to see the conditions they are living in. The children may still love their parents and not want to hurt them.
When you do take custody of a child they may need counseling to adjust to the new living arrangements. They are help groups for adults as well. Emotional help may be provided by your local help department. you will need to make an effort to understand how things have changed in society since your last raised children. The school systems are operating totally different now due to the recent events of school shootings. when have we become a society where children have to be afraid to go to school.
Well my point here is you will having a learning process to communicate with children growing up in today’s world. This is where the Kinship Navigator program can help out in many ways. to find out if your stay has a program search the internet by states with this programs. If you can’t find on check with your local services department.
I hope you never have this problem but if you do be sure and search out your options. The New Grandparents Rights are certainly something to check out. I wish you all the best. Good luck with your grandchildren.

I’m new to being a parent. My sister went to a better place a 3 months ago and since my nephew has never meet his dad, he wanted to live with me. It was not hard to say, yes. He is family and I love the little guy. I am in search of everything I can find on the internet about raising a child because I want to be the best uncle a kid can have so, thank you for the blog post and now I must move on to the next one.
